How to Have a COVID-Friendly Thanksgiving

Tips for how to navigate Thanksgiving during a pandemic.

Thanksgiving is just a month away, and like the rest of 2020, the holiday will undoubtedly look a little different this year. You may be looking for some new traditions that keep everyone safe while celebrating.

If you need some help deciding how to celebrate, we’ve gathered six ideas for a COVID-friendly Thanksgiving.

1. Stay Connected

If your extended family isn’t joining you in person this year, find ways to celebrate with them virtually. Decide on a set menu for everyone to prepare, no matter where they are celebrating. Have everyone think of what they are thankful for ahead of time, so they will be ready to share during the video call.

Be sure to designate a host or master of ceremonies to keep track of time and make sure everyone gets a chance to share.

It may feel silly to celebrate over a video call, but for families that haven’t seen each other in a while, it will still be nice to connect and catch up.

If you’re looking to connect with your clients, consider sending them a customizable Thanksgiving greeting!

2. Celebrate Outside

Outdoor gatherings are the norm right now, so you may decide to host a picnic for Thanksgiving this year. Host your Thanksgiving meal earlier in the day to take advantage of sunlight, and encourage everyone to dress warmly and bring extra layers. Break out some blankets and your firepits for a warm and cozy fall gathering.

Depending on comfort levels, groups may decide to bring their own food. If you are comfortable serving food to your guests, you may want to prepare single-serving sized dishes to eliminate sharing and streamline serving.

If you aren’t serving food, consider setting up an outdoor movie screening area to watch the parade, the dog show, the big game, or even some Thanksgiving movies. People can set up seats apart from other groups, and you can still be together to celebrate.

3. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to spread some holiday cheer while giving back to the community. Reach out to local organizations in need, and find ways to volunteer that work for you and your family. If you can’t volunteer to serve meals at a shelter, you may be able to drive around and deliver pre-packed meals to individuals or even help facilitate a canned food drive.

4. Get Creative

Get your creative juices flowing by making some Thanksgiving crafts and decorating your home. A cheerful home will help you feel better about the holidays, no matter how you celebrate them.

You can also write letters to friends and family all across the country. Have your kids draw pictures, include a nice note, and maybe even send them photos from past Thanksgiving celebrations. Your friends and family will be happy to know you are thinking of them.

5. Get Cooking

A silver-lining to the weirdness of this year’s Thanksgiving is that you can finally try those new Thanksgiving recipes you’ve been eyeing! Use this year to experiment with deep-frying your turkey, using creme fraiche in your mashed potatoes, or to finally master that homemade pie crust you haven’t been able to tackle yet. Perfect these new dishes this year so you can impress your family next year!

Another great way to celebrate is by making pies and baked goods for friends and family in the area. Spend a day baking, then deliver them to your loved ones’ homes. Even if households are celebrating apart, everyone can still enjoy the same treats on Turkey Day.

6. Stay Active

Another great way to spend Thanksgiving is by staying active! Sign up for one of the many virtual Thanksgiving races, or organize one with a small group of friends or family. If walking is more your speed, go for a walk around your neighborhood or go on a hike. Staying active is a great way to fill your day, get outside, and enjoy the holiday.
